On to the Upper Peninsula

Ernest Hemingway’s parents bought a cottage near Petoskey and that served as a gateway to his hunting and fishing adventures as a young boy. One of his best stories is the “Two-Hearted River,” based on his exploits at the river of the same name. I’m spending the night in Sault Sainte Marie, where locks allow the passage of ships back and forth between Lakes Superior and Huron.

    1. Yes, I remember her always talking about it. I won’t be visiting this time. It’s a fairly lengthy ferry ride.

  2. Neat. Had just brought up “The Old Man and the Sea” in conversation this morn jimbo. As complicated as a character as they come, Ernest, or maybe he’s emblematic of how complicated we people are. What did you decide for the last of the books you’d bring? Happy trails, looking forward to the next gifts of the road. And eat your veggies!

    1. I wound up taking Coming into the Country, Desert Solitaire, The Odyssey, 2 David Sibley books (on birds and trees) a Jim Harrison book on poetry, and about 15 travel guides. Have not opened any yet, except the poetry book!
