Day 2 in the Up

Headed west from Sault Ste. Marie and drove for probably 50 minutes between stands of white pine, birch and beech trees before I saw a single car on the road; pretty awesome. Went to a beautiful state park, Tahquamenon Falls, one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. From there it was on to Munising and a cruise on Lake Superior to see the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The cruise captain said you would need to take the 4 other Great Lakes + an additional 3 Lake Eries to equal the total volume of water in Lake Superior. Amazing stuff.

On to the Upper Peninsula

Ernest Hemingway’s parents bought a cottage near Petoskey and that served as a gateway to his hunting and fishing adventures as a young boy. One of his best stories is the “Two-Hearted River,” based on his exploits at the river of the same name. I’m spending the night in Sault Sainte Marie, where locks allow the passage of ships back and forth between Lakes Superior and Huron.

Day 1

A little later start than I had planned (11 am) and a little longer drive than I will be doing most days (400 miles), but a great start nonetheless. Found a charming B&B in Corning, NY (the Redwood Inn) and discovered an Elks Lodge in my walk back from dinner.
